Who is eligible for flu, COVID-19 and respiratory vaccines?

During respiratory virus season, eligible children and adults are encouraged to stay up to date on recommended vaccines to help protect themselves, their loved ones and their communities.

Everyone ages 6 months and older should receive an annual flu vaccine.

Because vaccine recommendations change each year, people should receive an age-appropriate vaccine approved for their age group.

Vaccination is especially important for people who are at a higher risk of serious complications from influenza.

COVID-19 vaccines are available for people 6 months and older.

The COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for people ages 6 months and older. The vaccine is especially important for people who:

  • Are age 65 and older
  • Are at a high risk for severe COVID-19
  • Have never received a COVID-19 vaccine

RSV vaccines are available for older adults, high-risk adults, pregnant women and infants

A one-time RSV vaccine is available for:

  • Adults age 75 and older
  • Adults age 50-74 at high-risk
  • Pregnant women who are 32-36 weeks pregnant between September and March 1. 

An immunization with RSV monoclonal antibodies is available for:

  • Infants under 8 months old, whose mothers did not receive the maternal RSV vaccine. 
  • Children between 8 and 19 months who are at higher risk for severe RSV and entering their second RSV season, whose mothers did not receive the maternal RSV vaccine.

When can I receive a flu, COVID-19 or RSV vaccine?

Getting vaccinated before respiratory virus season peaks helps give your body time to build protection before virus activity increases.

Flu: Getting vaccinated in early fall (September or October) before flu activity peaks is encouraged. It typically takes a couple weeks to build immunity. 

COVID-19: Getting vaccinated in early fall (September or October) is encouraged. 

RSV: For older adults and adults at high-risk for RSV complications, it’s encouraged you receive your RSV vaccine in early fall, which will offer protection throughout RSV season. 

Pregnant women can receive the maternal RSV vaccine during weeks 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, between September and March 1.

Infants 8 months and younger and children 8 to 19 months old at high-risk for severe RSV can receive monoclonal antibodies between October through March. 

Can I get flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines together?

In many cases, yes. Your primary care provider can help you decide the best combination for you.

Do I need a flu vaccine every year?

Yes. Flu viruses change each year and protection fades over time.

It’s recommended everyone age 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine every year. Protection from the flu vaccine decreases over time and the flu vaccine is updated each year to protect against the circulating strain.

How often should I receive the flu, COVID-19 or RSV vaccines?

Flu: A flu vaccine is recommended every year because flu viruses change and protection decreases over time.

COVID-19: Vaccine recommendations may change based on age, health conditions and previous vaccination history.

RSV: RSV vaccination is generally a one-time vaccine for eligible adults. Infants and young children may receive RSV immunization based on age and risk factors.

What are RSV monoclonal antibodies?

Monoclonal antibodies are not vaccines and do not activate the immune system.

Instead, the antibodies themselves provide direct and immediate passive protection from severe RSV. This protection lasts for at least five months and can prevent hospitalization.
