What is medical oncology

Medical oncology treats cancer using medications that travel throughout your body to destroy cancer cells. These treatments are tailored to your type and stage of cancer, as well as your personal health goals.

Common treatment types include:

  • Chemotherapy: Uses drugs to kill fast-growing cancer cells or keep them from spreading
  • Immunotherapy (biological therapy): Strengthens your body’s natural defenses to recognize and attack cancer
  • Targeted therapy: Targets specific proteins or genetic changes that help cancer grow. This approach can be effective with fewer side effects
  • Hormone therapy: Treats cancers that depend on hormones, such as breast and prostate cancer, by blocking or lowering hormone levels
  • Intraperitoneal chemotherapy: Delivers chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity for select cancers

What is hematology

Hematology is the medical specialty focused on blood, bone marrow, and the immune system. Hematologists diagnose and treat conditions that affect how blood cells are made and how they function. These conditions can be cancerous or non‑cancerous, and care often overlaps closely with cancer treatment.

At Marshfield Clinic, many doctors practice both medical oncology and hematology, which means they are specially trained to treat cancers of the blood as well as non‑cancer blood disorders.
