Endoscopic Oncology

Your endoscopic oncologist will work with you and your care team to determine the best treatment plan for your cancer.

For gastrointestinal cancers, a specialty oncologist like an endoscopic oncologist may be part of your treatment plan. An endoscopic oncologist provides specialized cancer treatments that may not be available in other cancer centers.

We offer endoscopic oncology services including:

  • Endoscopic ultrasound: This procedure is used to diagnose and determine the proper course of treatment for esophageal, gastric, pancreatic and bile duct cancers. It uses a special endoscope with high-frequency sound waves that provides images of the lining and walls of the area of concern.
  • Celiac plexus neurolysis: This procedure treats a group of nerves in the abdomen that can cause severe abdominal pain. This pain can be caused by pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis.
  • Fiducial marker placement: This procedure places marks that aid your radiation oncologist when providing radiation therapy for cancer treatments.
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatograpy:This procedure is used for defining the biliary and pancreatic ducts. It allows for diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic cancer. It is mostly used for relieving biliary obstruction with stenting.
  • Spy-glass cholangioscopy: This allows for direct visual examination of the bile duct and pancreatic duct for diagnosis and treatment of disease of the bile duct and pancreas.
  • Endoscopic suturing: After surgery to remove a superficial tumor or for complication such as fistulas and perforation, the defect can be safely closed endoscopically. Stents can also be anchored to prevent migration.
  • Endoscopic submucosal dissection: This is a minimally invasive endoscopic microsurgery performed in a subset of patients to remove early-stage cancer and other lesions in the gastrointestinal tracts.
  • Enteral stenting: This is for a select group of patients and is used to relieve obstruction in the gastrointestinal tracts.
  • Other services: Drainage of fluid collection from complications related to cancer surgery or pancreatic inflammation.
