Joint Fusion

If you're experiencing joint pain or instability that has been relieved with other nonsurgical therapy, our orthopedic surgeons can help.

Joint fusion, or arthrodesis, is a surgery that treats pain in the joints due to arthritis or instability. Joint fusion is usually recommended when there is significant damage to the joints, and joint replacement is not a good option. The most common areas joint fusion can be performed are the spine, ankle, fingers and foot.

Joint fusion surgery removes damaged joint tissue, cutting the bone as it meets the joint and fusing it using pins or plates so that the bones can grow together as it heals.

During recovery, you will wear a protective cast or brace. It can take around 12 weeks to recover and physical therapy may be recommended to help you regain mobility and strength.
