Medical Student Opportunities

Medical students have opportunities within the Marshfield Clinic System to utilize state-of-the-art electronic medical records, see multiple types of patients and interact with many different styles of practice.

Medical students from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health are able to participate in rotations in Eau Claire, Marshfield, Minocqua, Rice Lake and Wausau. From the Northwoods to the Chippewa Valley to Central Wisconsin, Marshfield Clinic offers a myriad of learning opportunities for students.

Senior medical students are in their fourth and final year of medical school.

Medical students work with patients under the supervision of physicians and do rotations in various specialties including family practice, pediatrics, gynecology, psychiatry and surgery. Following medical school, individuals must complete a residency program and apply for a license.

Marshfield Clinic is affiliated with several educational institutions and provides many senior medical students with clinical experiences necessary to complete their education. You must be a candidate for the MD or DO degree at a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association.

• Before Marshfield Clinic provides clinical experiences to students, eligibility requirements must be approved by the Division of Education.
• Contact an education program specialist for availability of electives.
• Housing may also be available for senior medical students in a credited clinical rotation.

In the fall of 2009, Marshfield Clinic was proud to pioneer the future of rural medicine as the first host site for the Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM). Since then, third-year and fourth-year medical students from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health have become part of a “Rural Pipeline” created to address the physician shortage in Wisconsin’s diverse rural communities.

More than 33% of Wisconsin citizens live in rural areas but only 11% of physicians have rural practices. Furthermore, 83% of Wisconsin counties are designated totally or partially medically underserved, and 77% of these underserved counties are rural.

The goal of WARM is to recruit students with rural backgrounds and career goals, develop a rural medical education track, and eventually expand rural residency training opportunities in the state.

This strategic plan will be centered around the following measures:

• A four-year curriculum with a rural practice emphasis
• Clinical training provided by faculty located within rural medical centers
• Diverse rural clinical experiences during medical school in many specialties
