Common Billing Questions

Marshfield Clinic's patient-centered focus extends to our billing and financial departments.

How can I pay my bill?

Marshfield Clinic accepts all methods of payment. Visit Billing & Payment Overview for options.

I see only one account/statement online – Where are my other bills?

If you used a billing statement account number to log in to Billing, you will see only that statement. Log in to or create a My Marshfield Clinic account to see all accounts and statements, for you and dependents.

Is there a difference between logging in with My Marshfield Clinic and using a billing statement account number to pay my bill online?

Yes; logging in to My Marshfield Clinic allows you to see all of your billing accounts and statements. Logging in with a billing account number allows you to see only that billing account and statement.

I have insurance – why am I being asked to pay?

Your insurance company may require payment for part of your services. Be prepared to make a copayment when you check in for an appointment. You may be asked to pay for non-covered services in full before care is provided. For questions about copay, coinsurance, deductible or non-covered services, contact your insurance company.

Marshfield Clinic submits claims to primary insurance and, if applicable, secondary insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid. Patients receive a bill when an amount is due and payable, responsible for the amount in the "AMOUNT DUE" box. Balance due is payable when the statement is received.

I sent a payment for the amount billed on a specific date of service. Why was the amount applied to other charges?

Payments are applied to the oldest charges first, unless you request otherwise.

I was provided a fee estimate for a procedure but I was billed for a different amount.

The fee estimate you received is based on anticipated services. Additional services provided would not have been included in the estimate. Services may change based on the medical care needed.

Why did I receive a charge from a medical provider I did not see?

Your doctor may have ordered tests that require interpretation by a specialist. For example: EKG, x-ray and labs.

I was a patient in the hospital. Why is my bill from Marshfield Clinic?

You are receiving a bill from Marshfield Clinic because a Marshfield Clinic care team member provided services to you while you were in the hospital.

I came in for my routine physical. Why are there two charges?

A preventive care visit is a service provided when you are in good health to evaluate and maintain your health. This exam does not include assessment of a new OR existing condition. When an existing or a new medical condition is addressed during the same visit, you will be billed for both a preventive care and an office visit. Industry billing guidelines require that a separate office visit be billed.

How often will I receive a Marshfield Clinic statement?

You will receive a monthly statement if there is a balance due after your insurance company processes your claim(s). Statements will be sent monthly until your personal balance has been paid in full.
