Intensive care: Marshfield Medical Center - Marshfield service spotlight

Marshfield Medical Center provider cares for an intensive care unit patient

Friday, April 20, 2018

Why Marshfield? Expert care is here for you

Every day our intensive care team at Marshfield Medical Center-Marshfield cares for patients who have experienced serious illness or injury. Our team of onsite, dedicated intensive care experts sets Marshfield apart in the region.

"No other hospital in north central Wisconsin has the complete spectrum of ICU care available like we have at Marshfield," said Dr. Jayanth Vedre, critical care physician and medical director of the medical intensive care unit (MICU). "In the MICU, we provide full breadth, state-of-the-art multi-specialty critical care services encompassing all medical subspecialties."

Team approach to care

On average this year, 22 patients are cared for in the intensive care units each day at Marshfield. The ICUs are a critical care resource to the entire hospital and clinic and collaborate with Marshfield's Level II Trauma Center and Primary Certified Stroke Center to ensure patients are given the best care.

"The incredible team effort of experienced physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other ancillary staff caring for patients is very important," Dr. Vedre said. "Our main goal is to help patients get healthier and return to being productive members of their community."

Onsite intensivists

Marshfield has 15 critical care physicians and four pediatric intensivists who are available to the unit at all times. Additionally, more than 80 ICU registered nurses are on the team.

"Having a dedicated staff is strongly recommended by leading national quality improvement and patient safety organizations, such as The Leapfrog Group," Dr. Vedre said. "Marshfield's team approach improves patient outcomes and reduces the risk for complications to assure patients return home sooner."

Intensive care services at Marshfield include state-of-the-art medical, pediatric and surgical ICUs with 24-hour access to advanced surgical and procedural care. Additionally, the hospital provides post anesthesia care for surgical and procedural patients and is the only neuro-critical care specialty-capable hospital in the area, offering comprehensive care for complex neurologically ill patients.

Caring experts you can depend on

Our experienced ICU care teams strive to be here for you in every aspect. Registered Nurse Julie Eilers is a 15-year critical care team veteran. For her, that means connecting with patients personally, sharing their sorrows and joys.

"I have met so many people who needed somebody to listen, and I've been there to help when patients couldn't help themselves," she said. "We take a personal interest in helping our patients."
