​A fascination with the science behind how the human body works led Sophie Arbefeville, M.D., to a career in pathology.

"Medicine is very intellectually challenging and allows me to develop valuable skills," she said. "It also undeniably serves a very noble purpose of helping people in need by doing good."

As a medical microbiology pathologist, Dr. Arbefeville supports the diagnosis of various infections using cultures or molecular testing.

Pathology provides an avenue for Dr. Arbefeville to fulfill a variety of passions in improving patient care.

"I am passionate about antimicrobial stewardship as it promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials, improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms," she said. "I am also passionate about infectious molecular testing, as molecular diagnostic tests have been associated with improved patient outcomes, antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, and reduced health care costs."
