IRON MOUNTAIN, MI – Cancer patients in the Upper Peninsula now have access to enhanced treatment options close to home, thanks to the successful completion of a $3 million capital campaign to support the new Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson Cancer Center.
The campaign, organized by Marshfield Clinic Foundation, brought together individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the Dickinson area community and beyond. Because of their generosity, the new Cancer Center offers specialized equipment, innovative technology, a patient-centered design and access to research. The Cancer Center opened in July 2024 with a total project cost of $10.5 million.
“This space, designed to offer peace and comfort amidst life's struggles, is a testament to the power of community," Jill Steckbauer, gift officer, Marshfield Clinic Foundation. “It was made a reality by the shared hope, inspiration and generosity of many. We are proud to continue our mission of caring, comforting and curing. I am humbled by the outpouring of support for this project and sincerely grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life."
More than 1,600 cancer patients are cared for at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson each year. In 2024, the hospital had more than 4,000 radiation oncology visits, including more than 1,500 chemotherapy treatments, along with other simulations, consults and follow-ups. The new Cancer Center has the potential to double previous capacity, offering cancer care to more Upper Peninsula residents close to home. The capital campaign also led to the hospital to investing in both clinical and non-treatment research trials. With the addition of a new radiation oncologist, this will allow for additional clinical trial options in the near future.
“Through the support of our community, team members, donors, volunteers and partners, we have met our fundraising goals for the new Cancer Center," said Mandy Shelast, president, Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson. “This achievement reflects the compassion, generosity and shared commitment of everyone involved. Together, we are building hope, healing and a stronger future for all those impacted by cancer. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you."
Marshfield Clinic Foundation is grateful for ongoing community support of local cancer care needs. Now that the capital campaign has concluded, donations will continue to fund cancer care and research programs at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson.
