Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see GI?

Many patients can self-schedule, however, if your insurance requires a referral, our team will coordinate with your primary care provider.

When should I start colorectal cancer screening?

Most average risk adults start at 45 and continue through 75. Beyond that, decisions are individualized.

Is colonoscopy the only option?

No. Stool-based tests (FIT/gFOBT, multitarget DNA) and imaging (CT colonography) are approved. A positive non-colonoscopy test should be followed by timely colonoscopy.

How do I prepare?

You’ll receive clear prep instructions. Strictly following the prep improves detection and may prevent rescheduling.

What if a polyp is found?

Your clinician can often remove it during colonoscopy via a snare and most polyps are benign, but removing them helps prevent cancer.

Will insurance cover my colonoscopy?

Coverage often differs for screening vs diagnostic colonoscopy; check with your plan and we’ll help clarify benefits.
