Frequently asked questions

Do I need antibiotics for a sinus infection?

Not always. Many sinus symptoms are caused by viruses that improve on their own; early self-care can include a short course of three to four days of a 12-hour decongestant spray, standard dose ibuprofen for inflammation, and avoiding forceful nose blowing. Persistent, worsening or non-resolving symptoms should be evaluated. Some cases are bacterial and benefit from antibiotics or further ENT care.

What are my options for significant hearing loss from otosclerosis?

Common pathways include observation for milder cases, hearing aids to amplify sound, or stapedectomy; a surgical procedure that replaces the fixed stapes bone function with a prosthesis to restore sound transmission.

How long before I notice hearing improvement after stapedectomy?

Most patients begin noticing improved hearing around four weeks after surgery as healing completes.

What is a cochlear implant and who might benefit?

A cochlear implant directly stimulates inner ear auditory nerve fibers to bypass damaged parts of the auditory system. This option is usually for severe or profound hearing loss. Treatment begins with a thorough audiology assessment to determine candidacy, followed by surgery and rehabilitation.

Is eardrum repair (tympanoplasty) an outpatient procedure?

Yes. Virtually all tympanoplasty surgeries, children and adults, are performed outpatient, with healing typically taking four to six weeks.

How do you approach sleep apnea care?

Evaluation, CPAP fitting, and when appropriate, laser or radiofrequency treatments coordinated with pulmonology, neurology and sleep medicine for comprehensive management.

How are complex voice disorders treated?

ENT physicians collaborate with speech pathology, neurology, gastroenterology and radiology to diagnose, treat and monitor recovery.
