A Specialist in Neurosurgery
John H. Neal, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon who has devoted his career to specialized functional neurosurgery treatments. He has been instrumental in bringing innovative technology to Marshfield Clinic and state-of-the-art treatment to patients.
He has been performing Gamma Knife® radiosurgery for more than 25 years to treat tumors, vascular abnormalities and trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain), performing over 3,000 procedures.
Dr. Neal treats patients who have Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, epilepsy and behavioral conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder with deep brain stimulation (DBS). He has performed over 1,000 procedures related to these conditions. In addition, Dr. Neal offers vagal nerve stimulation for epilepsy as well as treatment-resistant depression. More recently, Dr. Neal began offering hypoglossal nerve stimulation (Inspire® therapy) for obstructive sleep apnea.
Thanks to Dr. Neal’s expertise in treating movement disorders, Marshfield Clinic is able to offer focused ultrasound therapy for patients. This system will provide Dr. Neal with another option to treat patients with essential tremor or Parkinson’s Disease who may not be candidates for DBS therapy.
Dr. Neal earned his medical degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, and completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He believes in public service and was an active sworn law enforcement officer in Wisconsin for 20 years. When not working in Wisconsin, he continues to serve in law enforcement as a Reserve Deputy in California.
