A Specialist in Genetic Counseling

Crystal Fankhauser’s interest in medicine developed from a desire to support individuals during important, and often challenging, moments in their lives.
She was then drawn to genetic counseling because it blends science with patient counseling skills.
Crystal is a certified genetic counselor and earned her Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from the University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus.
She sees pediatric and adult patients for a range of concerns, including a personal or family history of cancer, genetic conditions and abnormalities identified on a prenatal ultrasound. She also works with patients who are seeking information about genetic testing, inheritance risks for genetic conditions and eligibility for clinical trials.
As part of the genetic counseling process, Crystal helps patients understand the genetics of a health condition as well as the pros and cons of genetic testing. Patients may choose to discuss their family health history and concerns without moving forward with testing.
“I provide care centered on clear communication, empathy and shared decision-making,” Crystal said. “I believe it’s important that patients feel heard, supported and empowered to make informed choices about their health.”
She values the opportunity to work with many different patients and conditions.
“Seeing patients gain clarity and confidence in their decisions is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work,” she said.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, biking and exploring new places. She also loves to travel. She lives with her husband, Mark, and their dog, Derby. Together they enjoy exploring Wisconsin and spending time outdoors.
They recently moved back to Wisconsin from Colorado and enjoy being closer to family.
