Dr. Alpa Shah is a psychiatrist who specializes in women's mental health. Her practice focuses on reproductive and gender specific factors influencing psychiatric illnesses. She also works with women to prevent and treat postpartum depression.

She directs the Perinatal Mental Health Clinic. This is a specialized service which provides psychiatric consultation and treatment for women who are pregnant, postpartum, or planning a pregnancy and suffer from mood and anxiety disorders.

"Management of women with psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum is complex, as you have to think about the effects of the illness and the treatment on the patient as well as her baby," Dr. Shah said.

Dr. Shah earned her medical degree and completed an OB/GYN residency in her native India. She completed a residency in psychiatry at Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in women's mental health at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
