Dr. Mithaq Vahedi learned early on serving others leaves him with a sense of joy and satisfaction. He also had a love for science and for interacting with people of all backgrounds.
“When a teacher encouraged me to pursue a career in medicine, I started working toward becoming a doctor, and doors opened," he said.
He chose his specialty area because of the learning that comes with it daily.
“There is a lot of innovation in the field and a lot of new devices are being invented to treat glaucoma earlier in the disease process," he said. “It is a lifelong disease and I like that I can get to know my patients over many years of caring for them."
Dr. Vahedi received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed residencies in ophthalmology and emergency medicine at William Beaumont Hospital. He completed a fellowship in glaucoma and anterior segment surgery at The University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri and a fellowship in glaucoma at The University of Texas in Houston, Texas. He is board certified in ophthalmology and emergency medicine.
He sees patients for glaucoma and cataracts and has expertise in cataract surgery (complex cataracts), trabeculectomy anterior chamber tube shunts, XEN® gel stents and comprehensive glaucoma exams.
He most enjoys operating and has a passion for cataract and glaucoma surgeries.
“I believe in caring for each patient as if they are my family member," he said. “I feel that it's an honor to take care of patients and I would like my patients to be happy with my care."
Outside of work, Dr. Vahedi has a special interest in learning about history. He also enjoys playing soccer, running, going on hikes, stamp collecting and playing the guitar.
He was born and raised in India to Persian parents. Dr. Vahedi grew up speaking Farsi at home and Hindi and English in school. His family is Persian and faced persecution in Iran because of being members of the Bahá'í Faith. He believes in the oneness of humanity and that “Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch."
