“I'm passionate about helping patients achieve significant relief or resolution of their symptoms so they can return to the activities and the life they want."
Melissa Pederson had always enjoyed the sciences, but had pursued a non-science degree in college. She later joined a plastic surgery practice in a non-clinical position, which opened the door to a shift in career focus.
“I found myself wishing I knew more and could do more to help alleviate the patient's symptoms and concerns. This led me to the path of becoming a physician assistant," Pederson said.
She received her degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
She sees patients for a variety of heart rhythm-related issues, including atril fibrillation and flutter, supraventricular tachychardia (SVT) and cardiac conditions requiring devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.
During appointments, Pederson strives to make sure her patients feel cared for and listened to.
“I want to understand their concerns, how their symptoms and conditions are affecting their lives and what their care goals are," she said.
She also provides education and evidence-based treatment options to help them achieve their goals and alleviate or resolve their symptoms.
She enjoys seeing her patients achieve significant relief or resolution of their symptoms so they can return to the activities and life they want.
“To share in that joy is really special," she said.
Outside of work, Pederson enjoys listening to music and audiobooks, watching movies and TV shows, traveling, exploring new places and taking outdoor walks.
