Jonathan Ploeger, certified genetic counselor, helps patients with genetic conditions and testing for hereditary risk factors.
He collects and assesses patient and family health information to help patients understand genetic health risk factors that may be present in their family.
“I have always been fascinated by the field of genetics and counseling was an ideal way to help others in this field I find so interesting," he said.
He enjoys educating patients about their genetic health history so that they can make informed decisions about their care. “I am able to help others and share the interesting factors of medical genetics while making a difference in patients' lives," Ploeger said.
If there is a diagnosis, Ploeger plays a role to help coordinate care that patient might need moving forward. “I strive to be a good communicator," he said. “Offering this service to our rural patient populations while collaborating with care team colleagues is rewarding."
Ploeger earned his Master of Science degree in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics from Clemson University in South Carolina.
He received his certification as a Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
While not at work, he enjoys hiking and kayaking.
