Dr. Desirae Schuh knew she wanted to give back to the community she was raised in when she chose optometry as her medical specialty.
“I wanted to enter the field of medicine because I wanted a career in which I could be of service to fellow community members, make a positive impact in others' lives, and work directly in patient care," she said.
Dr. Schuh treats patients with eye care concerns such as farsightedness/nearsightedness, presbyopia, glaucoma, macular degeneration, red eyes and dry eyes.
“My approach to care is to be kind and compassionate," she said. “I believe in supporting patient autonomy. I believe each patient should feel their time and eye health is valuable and while they are at their appointment, all my attention is on them."
A native of Nekoosa, Dr. Schuh is looking forward to treating patients near the community where she was raised.
“That was one of the main draws to Marshfield Clinic – the proximity to home and being able to give back to the community," she said. “I enjoy getting to know patients and their families, and I enjoy providing care to help patients live the best quality of life."
Dr. Schuh earned a doctorate in optometry from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois, and a bachelor's degree in biology from Viterbo University in La Crosse.
After participating in job shadowing opportunities and working as a scribe in an optometry/ophthalmology clinic, Dr. Schuh knew she wanted to work in eye care. “Providers knew I might be interested in that path, so they would show me interesting things they would find. I loved going to work every day and that was the key thing that made me realize this was definitely what I wanted to do," she said.
In her free time, Dr. Schuh enjoys outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and going for walks. She also enjoys crafting, reading and, most recently, cooking.
