As someone who likes to work with their hands, Dr. Matthew Brookes wanted to pursue surgical medicine where he could fix and heal people. After shadowing an ear, nose and throat physician, Dr. Brookes knew he would enjoy that specialty.
“It’s incredible how we can go through someone’s mouth in surgery and we don’t have to make an incision,” he said. “I get to work with an interesting part of the body because everything is so compact. It’s ‘high-valued real estate.’”
Dr. Brookes enjoys treating a variety of conditions from polyps in the nose to adjusting vocal cords and everything in between. He is most passionate about providing “instant gratification” for his patients.
“I like being able to operate on someone’s nose, then go in and do something different on another person’s neck,” he said. “I like being able to see something and fix it. That’s what I am here to do.”
Originally from Oregon, Dr. Brookes followed a recommendation from another otologist to come to Marshfield Clinic Health System. Dr. Brookes was hesitant about Wisconsin’s winters, but loves the Eau Claire area and is ready to take full advantage of the outdoors. He went snowboarding before in Portland, but is excited to have his wife, Olivia, try downhill skiing or snowboarding.
“I want to get back into snowshoeing, too,” he said. “I also want to try cross country skiing and ice fishing because those are popular around here.”
Dr. Brookes enjoys most outdoors activities including hunting, fishing and camping. He also is excited to travel throughout the state with his wife and friends.
