Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy

physical therapist and patient

We work with you to develop a therapy plan so you can enjoy the activities you love most and feel great doing so.

Together we can address recovery from injury, illness and surgery; coping with a life-long disability; and acute and chronic care, among other concerns.

Our physical, occupational and speech therapists will help your body heal and regain as much of its function as possible.

Does insurance cover physical, occupational and speech therapy?

Most insurance policies include some type of therapy services benefit in their plans. You can request a fee estimate of your therapy from our business office. Once an appointment is scheduled, they will check your insurance coverage.

How can I schedule an appointment?

There are two ways to schedule a therapy appointment:

1. Physician-Referral: Your doctor or other health care provider refers you.

2. Self-Referral: Some insurance carriers allow patients to refer themselves to physical therapy without seeing a doctor first.

Contact your insurance company to check coverage before referring yourself to physical therapy services without a doctor’s prescription.

Aquatic Therapy

Exercise muscles and joints without the stress of gravity in a swimming pool.

Aquatic therapy increases flexibility, function and endurance using aerobic, strengthening and conditioning components.

Back and Neck Pain Treatment

Acute and chronic neck and back pain can make daily activities nearly impossible.

Our therapists are trained in best practices to evaluate and treat your pain.

Treatment helps improve your performance of daily activities and may decrease the need for surgery.

Balance and Fall Prevention

Falls are a serious cause of injury and death in adults 65 years and older.

If you are concerned about your balance or have a history of falling, we can help.

Balance and fall prevention programs, including “Stand Tall, Don’t Fall,” involve exercises and safety recommendations to reduce your fall risk.

You and your therapist will work together to decide on a program frequency to meet your needs.

Cancer Recovery and Rehabilitation

Cancer treatments can cause you to experience changes in balance, strength, energy level, speech, weight and ability to move comfortably.

Cancer Rehabilitation and Recovery Services offers rehabilitation and exercises designed to help you move forward physically and emotionally.

Dizziness

Dizziness, vertigo, nausea and instability reduce your quality of life.

Our therapists offer specialized exercises and activities that can dramatically improve these symptoms.

Dry Needling

Dry needling therapy reduces acute or chronic pain and improves muscle function.

The therapy technique focuses on breaking pain cycles by creating changes in chemical levels of painful muscle tissue. Dry needling, in combination with other therapies, can help reduce:

  • Neck and lower back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis elbow or carpal tunnel
  • Headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Hamstring strains
  • Calf tightness or spasms

Our physical therapists perform this therapy using a thin needle to penetrate the skin at a trigger point, stimulating underlying muscular and connective tissues to decrease pain and improve movement.

Hand Therapy

Through evaluation and assessment, we can design an exercise program for post-surgical management of hand, wrist and elbow problems.

This includes:

  • Managing wounds and scars
  • Decreasing or eliminating pain
  • Making custom splints
  • Choosing appropriate braces

All of our sites are able to treat most hand issues. Additionally, we have specialized clinicians called Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs). See table for locations with CHTs.

Incontinence Therapy

Urinary incontinence is an uncomfortable condition that may affect your lifestyle.

Through evaluation of pelvic floor muscles, we can develop a strength and bladder-retraining program to improve your bladder control.

Industrial Therapy

If an injury or illness has prevented you from working, getting back on the job is a top concern.

Return to work quickly and safely with industrial therapy, a comprehensive physical and occupational rehabilitation program utilizing assessment, work conditioning/work hardening, education and simulated work tasks. Marshfield Clinic also offers pre-employment screenings for regional employers.

Lymphedema Management

Lymphedema is a chronic swelling, usually affecting an arm or leg, caused by a damaged or impaired lymphatic system.

It causes pain, heaviness and hardened tissue with restricted motion and use in the affected limb. Treatment focuses on these problems and helps you feel and move better.

Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurologic disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, strokes, spinal cord injuries or multiple sclerosis, affect daily function and activities.

Our therapists have advanced training and understanding of how to customize a program that improves your strength, balance, walking and ability to perform daily activities.

Orthotics: Custom and Over the Counter

Sore feet make daily activities and enjoying sports a painful challenge.

Our therapists assess your foot structure and movement and offer solutions that optimize the function of your legs, back and body as a whole.

Often, a custom or over-the-counter orthotic (shoe insert) helps performance during physical activity while also relieving foot, arch, heel, knee, hip and back pain.

Parkinson’s Rehabilitation

People with Parkinson’s disease may have unique movement impairments.

Our therapists use an evidence-based program that includes 16 sessions over one month (four individual 60-minute sessions per week), developed specifically to address movement impairments.

The therapy uses many repetitions of core movements of daily living, and has shown to improve speed, balance and quality of life.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are painful and may limit your lifestyle.

Our therapists offer a treatment to eliminate your plantar warts using a weak electrical current. Your therapist will slowly increase the current until you feel a tingling sensation.

The treatment consists of weekly visits for three weeks. Treatment time varies from 15 to 30 minutes. It is pain-free and has shown to be successful.

This treatment is not covered by all insurance plans.

Pre-Driving Assessment

Occupational therapists assess performance components needed for driving, including evaluation of reaction time and cognitive, visual and physical skills.

Speech Pathology

Speech and language pathologists prevent, assess, diagnose and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders for children and adults.

Spine Fusion/Laminectomy

Post-surgical rehabilitation programs guide you through recovery. Our therapists customize the program to help you return to activities most important to you.

Sports Therapy

We can help you prevent injury, assess a sports technique or recover from an injury.

We’ll enhance your skill level, improve your strength and endurance, evaluate your biomechanics and develop a customized conditioning program.

Marshfield Clinic will work with your school’s trainer and our sports medicine team to return you to your sport as soon as possible.

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) Therapy

Pain management and control is the first step in treating TMD. Physical therapists can help with targeted massage and stretching. They also work with patients to develop controlled mouth and jaw movement. This is particularly helpful for patients who hear a popping or clicking in their jaw.

Wheelchair/Equipment Clinic

We assist adults and children to obtain medically necessary wheelchairs, customized seating, walkers, bath equipment and other medical equipment.
