For kids living with diabetes a lot of questions exist, ranging from what’s on the horizon for treatment to how they can effectively manage diabetes as a busy teen.
A free Pediatric Diabetes Conference on Nov. 1 at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield will have the experts on hand with answers.
“More than 200,000 children and young adults under the age of 20 have been diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S., according to the American Diabetes Association,” said Laurie Meyer, a pediatric endocrinology nurse practitioner at Marshfield Clinic. “For a parent, having your child diagnosed with diabetes can feel like a lot to handle. But with good information and treatment, parents and their children can manage diabetes successfully. This conference provides that type of information.”
The three-hour conference will feature national diabetes advocate, speaker and author, Quinn Nystrom, a young adult who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 13. She’ll share information that serves as a primer for young children and their parents. Nystrom also will present “Life in the Fast Lane: Driving, dating and diabetes.”
The event also includes Dr. Angela Mojica Sanabria, a pediatric endocrinologist at Marshfield Clinic. She’ll present technologies used in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes and what the future may hold in terms of treatment and care. Type 1 diabetes in children is rising 2 to 5 percent each year worldwide.
Dr. Brandon Nathan, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota will discuss diabetes research and what’s on the horizon.
“We brought together experts based on what our patients have told us they want to learn about,” Meyer said. “The conference allows parents and children to hear from those on the front lines of diabetes treatment, research and advocacy.”
The conference runs from 9 a.m. to noon, following registration at 8:30 a.m. in the Froehlke Auditorium in the Clinic’s Laird Center for Medical Research, 1000 N. Oak Ave., Marshfield.
Seating is limited and preregistration is required. To register, call 715-387-9081 or email pedsendo.rns@marshfieldclinic.org by Oct. 24. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent. For directions and maps visit www.marshfieldclinic.org.
