Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua performs 100th robotic surgery

Dec. 9, 2020

MINOCQUA – Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua reached another milestone since opening its doors earlier this year when it performed its 100th robotic surgery on Dec. 3.

Urologist Dr. Matthew Thomas, who has performed dozens of surgeries at the hospital since it opened in June, performed the milestone surgery.

"We promised the Northwoods community that we would provide our patients world-class care with Marshfield Clinic physicians and staff in our own facility, equipment and resources," said Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua Chief Administrative Officer Ty Erickson. "Today, we're fulfilling that promise with the backing of an integrated health care system. Our local residents are getting care close to home, and we're getting them back home faster for a more comfortable and quicker recovery."

Marshfield Medical Center physicians perform more than 3,000 surgeries annually for Northwoods residents. The new hospital provides surgical and many other services closer to home for residents avoiding trips to Wausau or Marshfield for certain procedures.

Marshfield Clinic Health System uses the most advanced surgical robot available – da Vinci® Xi Surgical System – to perform minimally invasive surgeries such as general surgery, gynecological and a diverse array of urologic procedures. The variety and number of procedures being performed using the robotic platform are increasing each year. In fact, general surgery in Minocqua has been transforming the practice of hernia repairs from an open approach to a robotic approach over the past several years

Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua has been open to patient care for less than six months, and already it's made a significant difference in residents lives. The hospital's first baby was born on its opening day to patient care, June 15, and last month we celebrated the 100th birth at the hospital.
