CANCELLED - Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery (CLIMB®) - Eau Claire31814This six-week program gives emotional support to kids who have a parent or other loved one diagnosed with cancer. Children learn that being sad, frightened and even angry is part of this family experience. CLIMB® helps children moderate their feelings without having to “stuff” them or feel overwhelmed. Participants bond quickly with other children going through a similar experience. We offer the program free of charge four times per year. Please register at the start of each six-week program. The program is geared toward children 5 – 12 years old. Registration is required. Sessions are for children only and are held one evening each week from 530 – 7 p.m. for a total of six-weeks. Children receive a light dinner such as subs or pizza at each session. We invite parents to join their children for dinner on the first evening. The CLIMB® program offered at our Cancer Care & Research facilities in Eau Claire and Rice Lake. Specially trained leaders encourage open discussions about cancer, treatments and possible side effects. They also use visual aids such as large stuffed animals to demonstrate IV placement and other forms of treatment. Kids create art projects and do activities to help them identify and express the complex feelings of a cancer diagnosis. Children receive a workbook that they’re encouraged to share with their families. At the end of each six-week program, kids and their parents or other family members can attend a graduation ceremony, marking the progress they’ve made in coping with cancer in their families. It is a support group to learn, grow, find common ground and encourage each other in making positive decisions for their child.
