Welcome to the Marshfield Clinic Palliative Medicine Fellowship website. We offer one of the longest standing-accredited palliative medicine fellowships in the country, first established in 2002.

Unique Training Experience

The interdisciplinary team of the palliative medicine program at Marshfield Clinic is committed to improving the quality of life of patients and families facing life-threatening illness.

Strong institutional commitment to palliative medicine, diverse settings, specialist faculty, a comprehensive curriculum, all at the center of two large rural health systems, combine to create a unique training experience for the palliative medicine fellow.

Diverse Settings of Care in Rural Systems

The diverse settings of care stem from the Hospital's mission to relieve suffering, the Clinic's commitment to excellence in academic medicine, and lessons learned from participation in the Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments (SUPPORT):

  • 4-bed acute Palliative Care Unit
  • System of Palliative Care Resource Teams
  • Busy hospital consultation service (600+ new referrals annually)
  • Outpatient clinic and home visits
  • Outreach away from main campus, including telemedicine
  • 12-bed residential hospice house
  • Excellent local hospice

The palliative medicine fellow will learn both principal and consultative palliative care provision in rural health systems.

Marshfield Clinic Health System has over 735 physicians in 83 specialties at 41 geographic sites. Outreach consultation is provided away from the main campus, including use of telemedicine. The Clinic's mission is to serve patients by providing high quality medical care, medical education and research.
