"There is so much to gain by interacting and recognizing what your patients say. Having good communication is extremely important to providing great care."
Dr. Philip Smith offers comprehensive eye care including Lasik surgery, cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment with lasers, ocular surface disease and dry eye.
"I love surgery, cataract surgery and the advances in the technique of surgery with laser-assisted surgery and devices to make surgery more accurate," he said. "It's great to see the advances which allow patients who come in one day not seeing and the next day have near 20/20 vision."
Dr. Smith was introduced to the field of ophthalmology while doing summer construction work with his father.
"We remodeled an ophthalmologist's office back home and he recommended I observe a cataract surgery and see what I thought," he recalled. "He hired me as an ophthalmic tech and I worked there for eight months before medical school. I was fascinated by eye surgery and I enjoyed the personalized care ophthalmology entails."
Dr. Smith is a board-certified ophthalmologist. Smith went to medical school at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. Following medical school, he completed an internal medicine residency at Texas Tech University. He then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Maryland General Hospital – Friedenwald Eye Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Smith enjoys playing hockey, golfing, scuba diving, cooking, baking and going to concerts. He also enjoys music and plays the cello, trombone and the great highland Scottish bagpipes.
