Dr. Barbara Coulter-Smith has always enjoyed science and the human body. She said human bodies are amazing self-healing machines, but sometimes, they need our help. This is why she became an obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) physician.
“I love OB/GYN because it is a great mix of medicine and surgery,” Dr. Coulter-Smith said. “Women’s health care has been my major interest since medical school. I believe in preventive care and health maintenance, and I want to help women live a healthy, active lifestyle.”
Dr. Coulter-Smith cares for the full realm of general OB/GYN, including low- and high-risk pregnancies, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and menopause and hormone therapy. She also diagnoses and treats pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, abnormal PAP smears and any other gynecologic ailment. Additionally, she performs minimally invasive surgery, both laparoscopic and robotic.
“The most important element of patient care is the physician/patient relationship,” Dr. Coulter-Smith said. “Without that, we cannot learn from our patients to make a diagnosis and treatment plan, and they don’t develop the rapport or trust with us to follow through with the treatment plan.”
Dr. Coulter-Smith completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. She also completed her medical degree and doctorate through the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dr. Coulter-Smith grew up in Iowa, but has been vacationing in the Minocqua area for more than 20 years. In her free time, she enjoys water sports, biking, reading, travel and spending time with family and friends. She has been married for over 30 years and has two children, a daughter and a son.
