Construction set to begin for Marshfield Clinic Health System hospital in Minocqua

Minocqua hospital construction

Friday, Oct. 26, 2018

Marshfield Clinic Health System today announced it will begin construction in a few weeks on a new 72,000 square foot hospital attached to its existing clinic in Minocqua. The hospital will be part of an upward expansion of the clinic at 9601 Townline Road after Oneida County officials approved a conditional use permit for the project in February 2018.

"We're excited to take the next step in fulfilling our promise to the community by creating a modern, state-of-the-art facility that allows us to bring patients more accessible, high-quality services in the most efficient manner," said Dr. William Melms, long-time urgent care physician in Minocqua and currently interim chief medical officer for the Health System.

The new hospital will have 12 private patient bed rooms, a birthing center with 4 private patient rooms for labor and delivery (LDRP), a C-Section room along with 2 flexible/postpartum private patient rooms, a full surgical suite, including four operating rooms and three procedure rooms. It will have an emergency department, imaging and lab space, radiology, pharmacy and other services.

One of the operating rooms will have a DaVinci robot, which allows a surgeon to use precise imaging and placement tools to operate without opening a large area in the patient's abdomen during complex surgery. One of the procedure rooms will be a bronchoscopy room, used for examining a patient's airway through a bronchoscope.

A benefit of this layout means that a patient's medical team is on one medical campus with closer access and availability for face-to-face consultation. If a patient has a medical emergency during a visit with their primary care provider, Health System specialists and medical equipment will be accessible in the building.

The Health System's Minocqua Center offers a full spectrum of pediatric and adult primary and specialty care services that includes but is not limited to oncology, cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and more.

According to Melms, patient access is a top priority. "Currently when patients who are seriously ill come to our clinic, and it's determined they need to be hospitalized or have an emergency, we have to call an ambulance to come transport that patient to a higher level of care. When our new hospital is operational, we will be able to take care of those patients immediately in our combined facility, which will save critical patient transport time, costs and inconvenience."

BWBR of Saint Paul, Minnesota is the architect for the project.
