“I have a chance to make a difference for someone who comes in very frightened, discouraged and anxious.”
Dr. Warren Olds, a radiation oncologist
who joined Marshfield Clinic in 1993, has
been directly involved with profound
improvements in radiation therapy that
benefit patients with cancer.
Marshfield Clinic now offers sophisticated
cancer treatment in many of the larger
centers in the Clinic system. As medical
director of radiation oncology, Dr. Olds
started the cancer centers in Rhinelander
and Stevens Point, and helped design the
cancer center in Minocqua.
“The growth of the Clinic’s regional cancer
centers has made a dramatic improvement
in the lives of patients who could not easily
get to Marshfield for their treatments,” he noted. “Many of these patients can now receive their care much closer to home.”
The other major change has come in the equipment used in radiation oncology. “Vast improvements in technology allow radiation oncologists to successfully visualize and precisely treat more cancers,” he said. “We can fuse a prior C-T image with a current image to see the progress we’ve made in eradicating a tumor. Even in cases when we can’t cure the cancer, we can often fix a specific problem that is limiting the quality of the patient’s life.”/p>
Dr. Olds earned his medical degree and completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Virginia. He is a student of history, particularly medical and military history, and enjoys playing chess.
