Statement of Goals
- Provide experience in general thoracic/cardiac surgery, including preoperative assessment of patients, exposure to surgical procedures and involvement in postoperative care
Learning Activities
- You will become acquainted with the indication for common cardiothoracic operations with emphasis on procedures for coronary artery disease, valve problems and lung cancer
- History-taking and physical examination will be an integral part of the rotation
- You will gain familiarity with the conduct of operations
- The postoperative management will stress ICU care and progress through reading patients for discharge
- Follow-up of patients in the outpatient clinic will also be provided
Evaluation Methods
- You will be evaluated by surgical staff and residents on the basis of your performance, fund of knowledge, expressed interest and punctuality. There will be no formal examination.
When and Where to Report on the First Day of Service
- One month prior to the start of your rotation you will receive an e-mail including a confirmation letter and
housing information. This e-mail will also include maps to the city of Marshfield, Marshfield
Clinic, and the housing complex.
- You are to report at 8 a.m. on the first business day of your rotation to the Office of Medical Education. After orientation, you will be taken to your assigned rotation.
