Palliative Medicine Fellowship

Overview

A Message from the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Director

Welcome to the Marshfield Clinic-Saint Joseph’s Hospital Palliative Medicine Fellowship Web site. We offer one of the few ACGME-accredited palliative medicine fellowships in the country.

Unique Training Experience
The interdisciplinary team of the palliative medicine program at Marshfield Clinic-Saint Joseph's Hospital is committed to improving the quality of life of patients and families facing life-threatening illness. Patients are teachers, facilitated by palliative medicine specialists, of those who endeavor to provide either an improved palliative approach to care or specialist palliative care. Strong institutional commitment to palliative medicine, diverse settings, specialist faculty, a comprehensive curriculum, all at the center of two large rural health systems, combine to create a unique training experience for the palliative medicine fellow.

Diverse Settings of Care in Rural Systems
The diverse settings of care stem from the Hospital's mission to relieve suffering, the Clinic's commitment to excellence in academic medicine, and lessons learned from participation in the Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments (SUPPORT):

  • 11-bed acute Palliative Care Unit
  • System of Palliative Care Resource Teams
  • Busy hospital consultation service (500+ new referrals annually)
  • Outpatient clinic and home visits
  • Outreach away from main campus, including telemedicine
  • 10-bed residential hospice house
  • Excellent local hospice

The palliative medicine fellow will learn both principal and consultative palliative care provision in rural health systems.

Saint Joseph's Hospital has a referral base of more than two million people and is the flagship hospital of Ministry Health Care. The 524-bed hospital is the tertiary care center of the region and the hub of a 13-hospital system, whose Palliative Care Unit and team supports the development of palliative care resource teams at all other system hospitals.

Marshfield Clinic has over 735 physicians in 83 specialties at 41 geographic sites. Outreach consultation is provided away from the main campus, including use of telemedicine. The Clinic's mission is to serve patients by providing high quality medical care, medical education and research.
