Dermatology Residency Program
A Message from the Dermatology Program Director
The goal of the Marshfield Clinic-Saint Joseph's Hospital Dermatology Residency is to provide trainees with the education and practical experience that will enable them to deliver superior specialized care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucuous membranes. This experience will be varied, broad, progressive and systematic. The three-year program is designed to follow an initial training year in the fundamental clinical skills discipline. Training will include instruction in the pertinent basic sciences, all clinical areas that bear upon the specialty of dermatology, and training in research and teaching.
Residents will be provided:
- Suitable institutional environment
- Cooperative and supportive administrative authority
- Stable financial base
- Enthusiastic, competent, and available staff
- Adequate patient population
- Modern, efficient equipment and space
- Satisfactory liaison with other disciplines that relate to dermatology
The Marshfield Clinic Dermatology Residency Training Program is the first of its kind in training programs in dermatology. The primary teaching philosophy will be that of problem-based learning. This type of case-based curriculum encourages critical thinking, problem solving, self-directed education, and fosters communication skills across medical disciplines. Residents and learners take an assertive role in evidence-based education in this curriculum. The full details of this are outlined in "Problem Based Learning: An Approach to Dermatology Resident Education", Archives of Dermatology, October 2002. (PubMed ID: 12374534)
In addition to this unique curriculum, there are other learning experiences unique to the Marshfield dermatology experience. We believe that with our close working relationship among colleagues from various specialties, we have created a very broad and inclusive program covering all aspects of dermatology. By the end of the first year of dermatology training, we hope to have each resident satisfy or nearly satisfy the required number of surgical and procedural experiences set forth by the American Board of Dermatology.
It is the philosophy of the dermatology department that good dermatologists require strong clinical mentorship, fostered foundations in critical thinking, a happy work environment, and experiences with a broad variety of patient diseases.
For 40 years the Marshfield Clinic has actively participated in the year-round training of dermatology residents. Established in 1963 by Marshfield Clinic's first dermatologist, Dr. Stephan Epstein, the Dermatology Residency is the oldest of Marshfield Clinic-Saint Joseph's Hospital's residency programs. All current members of the core teaching staff have been intricately involved in residency training and education.
We will select two categorical dermatology residents each year to train for a total expected period of three years beginning in the PGY-2 year. In addition, we will offer a third categorical position every three years. Our total complement of residents will be seven residents. Application to the Marshfield Clinic-Saint Joseph’s Hospital transitional year internship is recommended for all candidates wishing to apply for the categorical dermatology position.
