Recently, the comprehensive pediatric services at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield have been awarded the recognition of "children's hospital" by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI).

At the same time, the hospital has a new name for these services that reflects this recognition—Saint Joseph's Children's Hospital of Marshfield. It joins only two other hospitals in the state, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital, with this honor.

Todd Stewart, MD, Marshfield Clinic pediatric intensivist on staff at Saint Joseph's Hospital and chair of Marshfield Clinic pediatric subspecialties, stated that Marshfield Clinic sub-specialists and specially trained staff are key components to NACHRI membership.

"While smaller community hospitals have fabulous general pediatricians, this membership highlights Marshfield Clinic's full scope of subspecialty services --if a child needs cardiology, intensive care services, neonatology or gastroenterology or any other pediatric sub specialty, those services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week," he said.

"Nearly any therapy, any treatment or diagnostic test that a child may require, we can do here, and I'm confident in saying we do it very well. I have no doubt that we provide a level of care in this region that can't be matched."

While Saint Joseph's Children's Hospital of Marshfield represents an independent identity, it physically remains within the walls of Saint Joseph's Hospital, and in no way changes the high level of specialty care provided to adult patients, according to Dr. Michael Kryda, Chief Executive Officer. "Our children's hospital recognition means we have a hospital within a hospital," said Dr. Kryda.

"Our commitment has been and will continue to be, offering the best technologies and care to patients of all ages. Saint Joseph's Hospital will remain a leader in providing the highest quality medical care for cancer, heart, orthopedic, trauma, neurological, pulmonary and all other conditions."

Saint Joseph's Children's Hospital services include:

  • A 24-bed pediatric unit including a 6-bed pediatric oncology (cancer) area and award-winning design.
  • Pediatric intensive care that includes trauma verification by the American College of Surgeons, Marshfield Clinic pediatric intensivist (critical care physician) management, an 8-bed unit and the highest-level PICU in northern and central Wisconsin.
  • Neonatal intensive care that includes 24 beds, Spirit Medical Transportation Services, Marshfield Clinic neonatologist (infant critical care) management and sub specialized nursing care. It is the highest-level NICU in central and northern Wisconsin.
  • Affiliations and partnerships including Ronald McDonald House, Children's Miracle Network, and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (pediatric heart program).
  • Pediatric subspecialty care, provided by Marshfield Clinic physicians, in all areas, including adolescent medicine, allergy, behavioral and developmental medicine, cardiology, child and adolescent psychiatric, endocrinology, gastroenterology, genetics, infectious disease, pediatric internal medicine, neonatology, nephrology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, oncology/hematology, pediatric palliative care, critical care and surgery.
  • The only Child Life Program in central and northern Wisconsin, with four degreed professionals certified in Child Life.

The National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) is a not-for-profit membership association of children's hospitals, large pediatric units of medical centers and related organizations, including those that specialize in rehabilitative and long-term care of children with series chronic or congenital illnesses. With 196 members and supporters, it is a collective voice for health systems devoted to the well being of America's 70 million children and their families, no matter how sick or poor.
