MARSHFIELD CLINIC MINOCQUA CENTER WELCOMES NURSE PRACTITIONER TO HOSPITALIST TEAM

Nurse Practitioner Jeri Ekman is the newest member of the Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center’s team of hospitalists.

Ekman joins Elvis Peter, M.D.; Freddy Conde, M.D.; Oghomwen Sule, M.D.; and Okwudili Nnaji, M.D.; providing full-time care for hospitalized patients.

Hospitalists are specialists who care for hospitalized patients. These providers are employed by Marshfield Clinic, but they provide care full-time on the inpatient floors at Howard Young Medical Center.

“Today, patients who are admitted to the hospital are generally more ill than they were years ago, which means they need more attention from health care providers, and they often need it more quickly than in years past,” said Laura Nelson, M.D., internal medicine physician and medical director, Northern Division, Marshfield Clinic.

The advantage for patients with the hospitalist model is that providers are right at the hospital when they are needed. Patients don’t have to wait until their regular doctor, or a doctor on call, can come to the hospital.

“In addition, because hospitalists spend all of their time caring for very seriously ill patients, they become highly skilled at meeting the needs patients have after surgery or in intensive care,” Nelson said. “Hospitalists become attuned to the specialized needs that they see every day. They meet with hospitalized patients and their families daily, discuss their conditions, their treatments and have a very positive impact on the care they receive. They then communicate with their regular doctors to ensure the continuity of care.”

Ekman received her medical education from Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Mchigan, and Aurora University, Aurora, Illinois. She has many years of experience in emergency nursing.

“We are very pleased to welcome Jeri Ekman to our team of hospitalists,” said Caroline Fender, manager, Primary Care, Marshfield Clinic.
