CHILD SAFETY GROUP URGES PARENTS TO “KEEP KIDS AWAY FROM TRACTORS”
The Childhood Agricultural Safety Network urges farm parents, as well as the agencies, organizations and businesses that serve agriculture, to promote the Network’s campaign theme, “Keep Kids Away from Tractors,” in observance of National Farm Safety and Health Week (September 20-26) and Farm Safety and Health Day for Children and Youth (September 23).
The Childhood Agricultural Safety Network is a coalition of health and safety organizations across North America. It is coordinated by the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety at Marshfield Clinic.
Two incidents this spring involving 4-year-olds who fell off tractors driven by their fathers – an Oklahoma boy killed in the blades of a trailing mower and an Idaho boy maimed in a rotary cultivator – have refocused commitment among safety experts to stop the practice of letting children ride tractors.
Of the estimated 100-plus farm-related deaths to children each year, most will die in incidents involving tractors and other machinery.
The Network has placed free safety awareness materials on its Web site (www.childagsafety.org) and encourages everyone to download these campaign materials and post them prominently to help spread the message, “Keep Kids Away from Tractors.” The site includes logos, posters and audio and video public service announcements by country recording artist Michael Peterson.
