Stephen Waring, D.V.M., Ph.D., has joined the staff of Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation as a clinical epidemiologist and research scientist.

“From a professional standpoint, this is a unique opportunity here,” said Waring, a native of Texas who spent seven years at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. “Very few places have true population-based epidemiology capability, and even fewer have the wealth of resources and magnitude of studies that Marshfield Clinic does. The Clinic’s genuine commitment to quality health care and research was clearly evident when I talked to people here.”

Epidemiology involves the study of disease patterns, risk factors and outcomes in human populations. As a clinical epidemiologist, Waring will be supporting clinician research projects as well as the research currently underway in the Epidemiology Research Center, primarily studying the effectiveness of influenza vaccines.

Waring earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. He earned his Ph.D. degree in epidemiology from the University of Texas School of Public Health, Houston, Texas. Since then he has worked as an epidemiologist and assistant or associate professor at Mayo Clinic and Foundation and the University of Texas School of Public Health, Houston. He has particular research interests in Alzheimer’s disease, healthy aging, and zoonoses (diseases transmitted from animals to humans).
