NURSE PRACTITIONER JOINS MARSHFIELD CLINIC MINOCQUA CENTER CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
Nurse Practitioner Sherrie Gilbert has joined the Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center Cardiology Department, working with fellow nurse practitioner Sharon Adleman and Cardiologist Tom Roy, M.D., to provide comprehensive heart care for patients in the Lakeland area.
“We are very happy to have Sherrie Gilbert join our Cardiology team,” said Rick Clark, administrator, Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center. “She is very patient focused and has an extensive level of education and experience that will greatly benefit our department.”
Gilbert will see patients for initial visits and follow-up care, work with patients to monitor their blood pressure and cholesterol, and consult with hospitalized heart patients.
“I look at the whole person, a holistic approach, to deliver the very best care for my patients,” Gilbert said. “I work with patients to chart a road map for improved health by reviewing family history, exercise, diet, social and emotional issues – everything that can affect a patient’s life. We then collaborate together to develop a specific plan for better health.”
Patients often see a nurse practitioner when they have a health problem because many health organizations need this additional professional staff to assure patients a timely appointment.
“For urgent or complex heart care needs, and in the case where insurance regulations may require a physician visit, my cardiology colleagues and I are still available for patients,” Roy said. “However, for many cases, we want to be sure that patients can get an appointment in a timely manner as we realize that the last thing people want to do is to wait a couple weeks, or even a couple days, to see a doctor. In these cases, the nurse practitioner can see patients sooner, can assess their problem, begin diagnostic testing and begin treating the problem. They will then consult with me about the case and see if follow up care with me is necessary.”
“In order to provide our patients with faster access to appointments, we have been utilizing our nurse practitioners in cardiology to a greater extent and have received very favorable comments from our patients,” said Jack Kruit, manager, Cardiology department. “Today, in many health care settings, it’s not always a physician that patients see, as many of the front-line health care providers are actually nurse practitioners. Our patients report that they have benefited greatly from the care they have received and the relationships they have established with our nurse practitioners, as well as our cardiologists.”
Gilbert previously worked as a nurse practitioner for Marshfield Clinic Wausau Center’s Women’s Wellness. She has many years of experience in caring for young adults to elderly patients with heart problems.
“I initially joined Marshfield Clinic because of the deep expertise of the staff and its belief that a patient’s needs come first. The referral system and easy access to specialists play a key role in formulating treatment plans for my patients,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert chose to join the cardiology department at Minocqua Center because she worked with the staff in Minocqua in the past and it is very comfortable and familiar to her.
“In addition, my husband and I would eventually like to retire here,” Gilbert said. “We have had a cabin near Ironwood for a number of years, and will work now to expand that into a full-time home.”
Gilbert completed her Masters Degree in Family Nursing through the accredited Nurse Practitioner program from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She is certified in women’s wellness and as a family nurse practitioner. She is currently working to attain certification in adult sexual counseling and has a special interest in sexuality and heart disease.
Gilbert and her husband of more than 30 years are active in sports clubs and enjoy spending time with their family. Gilbert also enjoys teaching educational classes through church groups.
