About James J. Holt, M.D.
Dr. James Holt joined Marshfield Clinic's medical staff in 1984. Having trained at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Holt specializes in otology (ear) and neurotology (inner ear tumors). In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Holt directs research and education activities related to the medical and surgical treatment of ear diseases.

Training
Dr. Holt's formal training in otolaryngology (ENT) was completed at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Advanced treatment and surgery for ear diseases was the focus of his last year of training at Mayo Clinic.
Educational sabbatical
After practicing medicine for 10 years, Dr. Holt took advantage of Marshfield Clinic's educational sabbatical program. This opportunity is provided to Marshfield Clinic physicians to continually provide the highest quality health care.
During the sabbatical, a physician steps away from patient seeing activities and concentrates on advanced studies and research. Dr. Holt took advantage of this 12-week sabbatical opportunity in 1991.
During his three months away from clinical practice, Dr. Holt studied with many senior ear specialists in the United States and Europe. In addition, these specialists reviewed surgical tapes from Dr. Holt's practice to critique his technique.
The senior otologists with whom Dr. Holt consulted, were carefully chosen to discuss cases and observe specialized types of ear surgery. Each surgeon was chosen to focus upon a specific ear condition.
Dr. Holt's sabbatical was taken after formal training and 10 years of surgical practice. Therefore, he could focus on a post-graduate level of advanced learning.
Even after the sabbatical, the learning process continues. Intraoperative video segments of Dr. Holt's most difficult cases have been reviewed by senior otologists. This continued education has increased the level of skill that Dr. Holt brings to each of his patients.
Publications and presentations
Dr. Holt is the author of over 20 scientific articles and videotapes. In addition, he has given approximately 125 professional presentations to local, national and international groups.
Surgical experience
Dr. Holt has performed more than 2,500 major ear surgeries.
