Resources for Investigators

Research Publications Core

The Research Publications Core assists with getting results of medical research published by providing Marshfield Clinic investigators support in manuscript writing, editing, and submission; assisting the Editor-in-Chief in publishing Clinical Medicine & Research; and assisting the Director of Medical Research (DMR) in the management of scientific productivity.

Research Publications Core staff offer the following services:

  • Publication process training and advice
  • Literature searches and updates
  • Selected research facilitation tasks for case reports
  • Manuscript preparation
  • Proofreading for sentence structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Reference checking for accuracy against PubMed and other resources
  • Assistance with the selection of publication venues
  • Manuscript formatting for compliance with journal submission requirements
  • Completion of copyright transfer forms and securing collaborator signatures
  • Cover letter drafting
  • Preparation of the final submission package for mailing or electronic delivery
  • Assistance in responding to reviewer comments, manuscript revision and resubmission

In addition, the Research Publication Core coordinates the publication of Clinical Medicine & Research , a peer-reviewed publication of original scientific medical research that is relevant to a broad audience of medical researchers and health care professionals. For details on submission of articles, see Clinical Medicine and Research Instructions for Arthors

The Research Publication Core also maintains a publications database for all publications and meeting presentations by Marshfield Clinic investigators. This centralized source for Marshfield Clinic scholarly publication information is useful for a variety of management purposes, including tracking trends in the quantity and quality of publications, and efficient allocation of resources. This database is also the primary source for the Research Publications section of the annual Marshfield Clinic System Review Research Supplement.

The Research Publications Core prioritizes investigators’ requests for assistance based on the following criteria:

  • Date of submission of the request for assistance
  • Type of manuscript, e.g., original research will normally be given priority over case reports, review articles and letters to editors
  • Potential impact of the results to the medical and scientific communities
  • Research time available to the investigator, e.g., a request from a clinician investigator without dedicated research time may receive priority over a request from a scientist or clinician with dedicated research time
  • Amount of work required, e.g., a request to edit a draft manuscript before submission may receive more immediate attention than a request for the Research Publications Core to write an entire first draft
  • Availability of resources by type, e.g., literature search personnel may be more available than scientific writers

The Research Publications Core is staffed with a Ph.D. Director; master's and bachelor's prepared scientific writers, a Senior Editor of Clinical Medicine & Research, other staff including a copy editor/proof reader, an information specialist and an administrative secretary.
